On Dec. 3, 1967, Surgeon Christiaan Barnard performs first human to human heart transplant at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa.
The transplant patient was 55-year-old Louis Washkansky a South African grocer who had diabetes and incurable heart disease. Mr. Washkansky survived eighteen days.
